A rose (container) by any other name?
As more and more enterprises embrace the use of containers for their production workloads, one might conclude that containers are only for servers and their services. Not so! The convenience and portability of containerization can be employed on your own personal laptop or desktop.
But why, you may ask? Because it’s much easier and more convenient to have all of your code (and needed dependencies) packed and zipped up nicely. Many modern Linux distributions boast support for multiple container types; from Flatpaks and Snaps, to AppImages and LXC, the sky is the container’s only limit. When we also consider the security sand-boxing used by containers, the future of package management seems to be on the horizon.
As with all software systems, these tools are not flawless, not perfect, and will definitely improve with time and maturation. There are some differences between the formats so do some reading to find your favorite container format for your use case.
