Never stop building.
For several years, my professional career website has been a free Google page that I quickly built on a whim one night. It served it’s purpose well as a central hub for my resume, my LinkedIn, etc.
But now, years later in late 2021, I recently rebuilt my career page as a static Hugo page that deploys in a container from a GitHub repo. I really like it. All that’s left is to buy myself a domain name to use and setup a theme for mobile devices. I plan to write up a short document on the process I undertook as I developed and coded this from my personal home-lab environment.
You may wonder why it’s worthwhile to build a small development pipeline like this, but the learning experiences are priceless. Although the end results may both be an online home for my career info, the technical back-end has made a huge leap forward as has my knowledge on the static Hugo services. For a Wordpress, as an example, you need a database, a PHP instance, a web server, and typically a Linux server to house the stack. Here, in Hugo, all of that is gone. I now have only simple flat text files, and their code is deployed into a container directly from the files’ repository in Git. Brilliant.
This is precisely the kind of FREE project I would love to teach you.
The software is free as is the hosting on GitHub. Seemingly small, this one migration touched on Git repos, SSH key authentication, web servers, Markdown / HTML / YAML / TOML, and local Raspberry Pi hardware networking. Any of these skills could potentially earn you a desirable job in the industry.
