No hard drive? No problem.

Did you know you can run Linux “live” from your computer’s RAM? No installation required. It doesn’t affect or disturb your local hard drive OS, in fact, it’ll work with no hard disk installed at all! I have used this feature many times while working my way through school and using broken hardware, using a public or shared device, etc. Yes, even Macs.

If you have a blank CD or USB stick, you can setup a live medium for a free, highly portable Linux environment. The more intrepid Linux explorers can even setup persistent storage so your settings will be preserved across reboots. If nothing else, at the very least, this allows you to have a fail-safe option when your proprietary OS inevitably chokes and kicks the bucket.
