A VPN is not a silver bullet.

There are lots of marketing claims and lots of buzzwords regarding VPNs these days, but unfortunately much of it amounts to e-snakeoil sales.

Virtual Private Networks can come in a few variations, but for the typical home user, a VPN connection would “shield” your activities online via encryption. This encrypted VPN “tunnel” would ostensibly protect your data from criminal intrusion and corporate surveillance alike. Or so the claims portend.

Assuming the service is acting in good faith and not a malware scam, the service’s infrastructure is well-maintained, and there’s no system-level configuration errors, then a VPN could be advantageous in certain scenarios. Bottom line: as is always the case, there is no magical quick fix solution for security.
